The Effect of Transient Nucleation on the Microstructure Formed by Nucleation and Growth

We consider the crystallization of a thin film via interface-limited growth and throttled nucleation, a transient nucleation schedule in which the nucleation rate is turned off before the sample is fully transformed. The resulting microstructure ranges between Site-Saturation and Johnson-Mehl limits and depends only on the area fraction transformed when throttling occurs. We use a novel computer simulation method, the eikonal equation approach, to obtain the respective distributions for the grain area, the number of nearest neighbors, and the grain shape.
